The media was more than a little ticked off when campaign Romney froze them completely out of a high dollar fundraising event in the republican rich Metro-Atlanta Cobb County, the very county that was the center of Newt Gingrich’s congressional days while Speaker of the House. Not that Gingrich was not present at the event…it’s just no one but attendees could really confirm his presence.
Gingrich endorsed Romney several weeks ago at the state GOP convention, but the media clamp down was so tight that not one single news report after the event mentioned Gingrich’s presence. Curiously, the former presidential candidate scheduled a press conference for Tuesday morning.
The press lockout is nothing new for Romney, or for that matter President Barack Obama, who has raised money numerous times in Georgia, leaving the press out of the high dollar events. But the failure to have Gingrich appear with Romney may say much more than any GOP official will let on.
Longtime Gingrich friend and InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery “Everything has been going Romney’s way recently and I am pretty sure the Romney campaign did not want anything to detract from the series of bad news stories that we have seen concerning the economy, the Obama administration, and the results in Wisconsin.” Towery added “I think that Newt and the other candidates have to resign themselves to the fact that Romney will likely not feel the need for their services as major surrogates…It is really no insult to Newt if that’s the case, he has a whole new life to pursue and after the grief the press has given (former President) Clinton in the last week, I don’t think long-term he would want that responsibility.”
Regardless of what Gingrich has to say at his press conference Tuesday, it will likely not be in the presence of Mitt Romney. Romney will already be in Florida, on to his next event.
